Support protected bike lanes on Frida Kahlo

SFMTA is planning to build a protected bike lane on Frida Kahlo Way to connect Sunnyside with Ocean Avenue and the Ingleside Neighborhood. The project will also include improvements to pedestrian safety and transit reliability.

Slow Hearst supports this project, and we have created a template for supporters to send an email to SFMTA to express their support for the project.

According to the agency:

The Frida Kahlo Quick-Build Project aims to improve safety for people walking and bicycling on Frida Kahlo Way and Judson Avenue west of Foerster Street. It seeks to strengthen active-transportation connections between the Sunnyside and Ingleside neighborhoods, Ocean Avenue commercial corridor, City College, and planned residential development on the Balboa Reservoir.

The project will upgrade pedestrian crossings, add a protected bikeway, consider changes to improve transit access and reliability, and review curb management for schools in the area. The project supports implementing goals and priorities identified in the recently completed District 7 Ocean Avenue Mobility Action Plan, previous planning efforts in the area, and SFMTA’s Vision Zero Program.

The project includes safety improvements such as:

  • Adding a protected bikeway on the east side of Frida Kahlo Way and south side of Judson Avenue. This would physically separate people riding bikes from people driving, making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

  • Building bus boarding islands to improve the safety and reliability of Muni service.

  • Relocating and consolidating bus stops to make it easier for people to get on and off the bus.

  • Making changes to curb management to improve loading and unloading for businesses and to provide more space for bike parking.

  • Adding a new crosswalk and pedestrian signal at the intersection of Frida Kahlo Way and Ocean Avenue to make it easier for people to walk to and from the Balboa Reservoir BART station.

Please take the time to send a letter today to express your support. You can customize our template or send your own.

Correction: a previous version of the email template referred to a recent death of a student walking to school, which was incorrect. In 2013, a driver did kill a pedestrian in a crosswalk on Judson Avenue, but the victim, Becky Lee, was an employee at Sunnyside Elementary school.
